What does it take to be part of an award-winning project/team? Hear first-hand from some DBIA project/team award winners and awards jury members the magic behind the success. Representatives several projects (including both the Owner agency and the design-builder) will discuss the aspects of the project’s success that drove them to submit it for an award, why the design-build model was beneficial for the team and the project, and lessons learned that others can use to leverage similar success.

Barbara Jackson is a leading expert in design-build and integrated project leadership. Jackson spent 20 years in the design and construction industry and served as President of Design/Build Services Inc. before becoming a leading educator of Design-Build at Cal Poly (1998-2013) and the University of Denver (2013-2022). Jackson was honored with DBIA’s prestigious Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award and recognized as a DBIA Fellow by the Institute 2018. She’s also the author of Design-Build Essentials.

Clancy Welsh serves as president of Garco Construction. He moved into this role after his extensive experience as a successful project manager. Currently he focuses on developing business opportunities; providing high-level project leadership and guidance; enhancing industry and community relations; and strengthening the mission, values and vision to support Garco’s unique culture. His diversified project portfolio includes public works, K-12 educational facilities and private works.

Garrett Jones

City of Spokane Parks and Recreation
Garrett is a seasoned Landscape Architect that works with the City of Spokane. He has guided numerous open space municipal projects from initial visioning through permitting, construction, and operations. Garrett’s proven track record of successfully completing municipal projects and building strong partnerships earned Garrett the role of Director of Parks & Recreation in 2019. In 2020, he also began overseeing the City of Spokane’s Resident Experience division.
