How VDC Planning and Execution Can Drive Successful Design-Build Outcomes
|CONTENT EXPIRES: December 31, 2022|
Beginning with the owner’s objectives in mind, virtual design & construction (VDC) planning elevates everyone’s thinking to a more integrated, strategic level while driving value throughout the project. This session offers a straight-forward project delivery map for integrating BIM as the tool, LOD as the language and VDC as the process. A playbook, exercise and examples demonstrate steps toward success (and missteps to avoid) – from RFP through contract, execution, and delivery and turnover.
1) Map an integrated VDC process that aligns with a Design-Build project delivery model to drive value for the owner to achieve their goals.
2) Articulate how the owner’s BIM-enabled expectations should be integrated into the performance-based requirements of their RFP/RFQ language, as well as becoming part of the qualification and value-based selection process.
3) Identify and bring the right individuals to the table early in the VDC process (including the new role of a VDC Leader) to spark innovation while driving value and mitigating project risks as an integrated project team.
4) Define the most common points of misalignment and how to avoid waste and redundancy across the design-build team.
Alex Belkofer, CM-BIM

As a regional leader and national collaborator at McCarthy, Alex is responsible for the overall strategy, implementation, and execution of the virtual design & construction (VDC) process between all project stakeholders. From corporate office to construction site, he promotes, trains and guides McCarthy teams through the VDC process over the course of a project’s life cycle. Alex is a key contributor, serving on McCarthy’s National VDC Leadership Group to enhance the consistency and delivery of BIM-enabled strategies and best practices companywide.
Alex’s passion and drive for construction technology is to push the industry to leverage best-in-class solutions focused on effective project delivery and lean principles for value-added outcomes. He is active with various national organizations focused on construction technology, such as AGC BIMForum, Campus FM Technology Association (CFTA) and DBIA. Alex holds a Dual Degree (BS) in Architecture and Construction Systems Management from The Ohio State University.
Brian Skirpac, CM-BIM, Assoc. DBIA, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP BD+C
Brian, CannonDesign’s Director of Virtual Design & Construction (VDC), continually drives innovation by focusing on the process orientation of the Building Information Modeling (BIM)-enabled VDC delivery process. He has 25 years of industry experience, with the last 15 focusing on the integration of BIM and VDC to transform project delivery. Brian has successfully developed and managed BIM-enabled delivery systems for many CannonDesign Builders’ efforts. In addition, he focuses on the use of building information models to capture and structure relevant facility data to achieve the value a BIM-enabled VDC delivery process brings to facility owners from an interoperable life cycle management strategy. A thought leader in this field, he is an advisory group member and past chair of the AIA National Technology in Architectural Practice Knowledge Community and serves on the BIMForum committee responsible for authoring the LOD Specification.
