Design-build is no longer an alternative delivery method, it’s mainstream and gaining momentum. FMI forecasts it will represent over 47% of U.S. construction spending by 2028, accounting for nearly half the market and more than $2.6 trillion in project value. Yet despite its widespread use, persistent myths and misconceptions continue to shape how Owners, teams and decision-makers approach it, often limiting its full potential.

This session cuts through the noise to challenge some of the most common, and costly, misunderstandings about design-build. From competition and Owner control to speed, quality and team composition, Jennifer Macks, PE, DBIA, LEED AP, Vice President and Business Unit Leader at HITT Contracting, will separate fact from fiction and explore how design-build actually performs when it’s structured and executed effectively. Participants will leave with a clearer, more confident understanding of how to leverage Design-Build Done Right® to drive better outcomes.

After this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Debunk common misconceptions about design-build related to competition, team selection and market access and explain how the model can expand, not restrict, opportunity.
  2. Clarify the Owner’s role in design-build, demonstrating how Owners retain meaningful influence over design outcomes through effective procurement, governance and collaboration.
  3. Explain how design-build drives both speed and quality, using integrated teams and early alignment to reduce risk, rework and schedule pressure.
  4. Identify ways design-build supports risk allocation by facilitating shared risk discussions and aligning expectations on contractual considerations and unknown conditions.

Attendees can earn 1.0 Continuing Education Hour (CEH) and registration is FREE for DBIA members and only $25 for non-members.
