FMI’s recent study projects design-build will reach 47% of U.S. construction spending and exceed $1 trillion by 2028. Within that expansion, Progressive Design-Build (PDB) now accounts for roughly one-third of design-build procurements, with adoption accelerating on projects facing technical complexity, cost volatility and evolving scope. Owners are increasingly turning to PDB to manage uncertainty and align risk before construction begins.
That growth is why DBIA released our new Progressive Design-Build Best Practices. While grounded in the principles established in the 2023 Design-Build Done Right® Universal Best Practices, PDB introduces distinct procurement, contracting and execution dynamics that are not fully addressed in a universally framed document. As use of PDB expands, so does the need for clearer guidance to reduce confusion and improve performance outcomes.
This webinar provides a high-level introduction to the new best practices document and the framework behind Progressive Design-Build Done Right®. Participants will explore how the primer builds upon the Universal Best Practices while clearly distinguishing PDB-specific guidance. The session will walk through the document’s three primary sections — Procuring, Contracting and Executing Progressive Design-Build — and explain how each section pairs overarching Best Practices with practical implementing techniques.
Designed as an orientation rather than a technical deep dive, this webinar will help Owners and industry professionals understand the structural differences between traditional best-value design-build and PDB, and how to begin applying this more clearly defined framework across projects of any type, size or sector.
By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Explain why the growth of Progressive Design-Build necessitated method-specific best practices beyond the universal design-build framework.
- Describe the structure of the Progressive Design-Build Best Practices document, including its three primary sections — Procuring, Contracting and Executing PDB services — and the relationship between overarching Best Practices and implementing techniques.
- Recognize high-level distinctions between best-value design-build and PDB, particularly in procurement approach and progressive development of scope, schedule and cost.
- Identify how the primer reduces confusion and supports consistent application of PDB principles across projects no matter the size, type or sector.
