In the design and construction industry, we have primarily focused on management as the predominant skill set needed for success. However, the old model of simply “planning the work and working the plan” is no longer all that is needed to succeed in our business. As an industry we need to shift from being order takers to being value generators, and that requires far more than management skills. What is missing and needed is a new kind of leadership, capable of influencing and inspiring real change to impact the cultural traditions and behaviors that have hindered our industry and stifled real innovation for far too long.

Before you can move minds, you have to be able to move hearts. This is quite counter to the traditional “command and control” style of leadership that our industry is known for. But “command and control” hasn’t worked for quite some time. Instead, what is called for, but often missing in leadership, is the ability to inspire, motivate, and energize people every day. It is inspiration and motivation that can moves hearts, and ultimately, move minds, to achieve your organizational goals. In this session, we will focus on how you can intentionally improve the inspirational effect that you have on people and the difference that makes in their performance and commitment. We will explore how inspiration and leadership are interconnected and consider how genuine conversations galvanize people to achieve more than they thought possible.

Most people think that presence is something you are just born with. Not true. Presence is actually a set of skills both internal and external that virtually anyone can develop and improve. Presence impacts how you show up, how you connect and how you speak. However, it’s not easy to make these improvements. It requires giving up some bad habits and changing some behaviors. But the investment is worth it if you want to build trust and credibility and strengthen your relationships to enhance collaboration. Bottom line, developing presence will make you a more effective leader.

Baabak Ashuri is Associate Professor and Brook Byers Institute for Sustainable Systems (BBISS) Fellow in the School of Building Construction and the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Georgia Tech where he directs Construction Research Center (CRC). Dr. Ashuri’s educational, research, and consulting activities focus on Project Analytics, Construction Engineering & Project Management, Investment Valuation, Economic Decision Analysis, and Innovative Project Delivery Systems (Design-Build (DB), Design-Build-Finance (DBF), Public-Private Partnership (P3), Construction Manager/General Contractor (CMGC), and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD)). His work has implications for improving long-range planning and integrated decision-making process for delivery of resilient and sustainable infrastructure systems.

David Hannon is a Professional Engineer with more than twelve years of highway design and project management experience. David has a Bachelors in Civil Engineering and a Masters in Building Construction both from Georgia Tech. David is currently serving as the Chief Infrastructure Officer for the I-77 Mobility Partners concessionaire company. In this role, David is overseeing the design and construction of 26 miles of new HOT lanes along I-77 in North Charlotte.
Prior to joining Cintra, David spent four years working at HNTB and with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), as a program manager for GDOT’s Design-Build program. While serving as a program manager David was invited by Georgia Tech to participate in a unique research project identifying efficiency opportunities in Design-Build project delivery and management. This research included interviews with seven leading State DOTs on best practices for managing Design-Build projects and writing a guidebook on management strategies that was be published in the Fall of 2013.

Ray Moran, P.E., DBIA, Ray is currently the Area Manager of Construction Services for PB’s NY & NJ operations. Ray has served as Owner’s Representative in construction on numerous DB projects over his 20 year career both nationally and internationally. His Recently Completed DB Projects include the SCDOT Replacement of the Ben Sawyer Bridge and NYSDOT’s 1st DB project, the Emergency Reconstruction of NYS Route 42 after Hurricane Irene.

Brendan W. Smith is a Lead Civil Engineer with WSP and holds BS and MS degree from Manhattan College. He has 12 years of experience in highway design, utilities, Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) and construction management within the New York City, functioning in both technical and managerial capacities. Since 2014, Mr. Smith has been responsible for the development of MOT plans for the LGA Central Terminal Building project. The landside design features a complex roadway network which provides access and egress to the existing and the new Central Terminal Building.
The MOT plans consist of multiple packages which include drainage, roadway alignments and profile, temporary signage, pavement markings, ITS and lighting. Development of the packages requires close coordination with all stakeholders which include the client, the contractor, city and state agencies. For each phase, Mr. Smith tested concepts with WSP’s traffic modelling group to develop concepts and implement the sequencing of construction to successfully minimize
Mir Dema
Mir Dema is a Senior Project Engineer with over 19 years of construction industry experience. He has worked with Skanska USA Civil in New York City for over 15 years. He is experienced in Heavy Civil operations relating to structural steel, piling, welding, concrete and staging/logistics. He has served in various roles ranging from Project Manager to Project Superintendent. Being involved with the LGA Central Terminal Building project since the bid development, Mr. Dema has been responsible for the construction phasing/planning and design- build development of the MOT plans. Mr. Dema also is involved with site-wide coordination and technical assistance with the various project teams as needed. He works in conjunction with WSP in developing the MOT plans to best capture the construction work zones while maintaining the same or better level of service for the existing airport roadway network.
