Two signature building projects under construction in the city of St. Louis are demonstrating the benefits of integrated delivery to their owners and stakeholders. This session will trace the individual journeys of BJC HealthCare (one of the nation’s largest nonprofit health care organizations) and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (a combat support agency within the U.S. Department of Defense) in evaluating and selecting design-build for their latest expansion projects. While each organization has a unique mission, distinctive project goals and individual challenges, they both determined that design-build offered the greatest opportunities to accelerate the project schedule, manage costs and reduce potential risks. BJC selected progressive design-build for a new 16-story inpatient hospital tower at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. It’s part of the third phase of BJC’s Campus Renewal, a long-term vision to transform the Washington University Medical Campus through new construction and renovations. And the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District, opted to enlist firm fixed price (lump sum) design-build delivery for the new $1.7 billion Next NGA West campus, the largest single federal investment project in St. Louis history. The presenters will share details and practical advice on the evaluation process that led each organization to embrace design-build delivery.
